How to Avoid Online Business Scams

When browsing the Internet these days one can’t help but be bombarded with half a dozen advertisements that promise to make us all filthy rich within a month. To make things trickier these companies often will create their own "scam detector" websites with the sole purpose to validate their website while eliminating their competition.

An easy way to determine if an offer is valid or a fraud is to check and see if they require a start up fee to join. Very few legitimate businesses will require you to pay then in order for them to pay you! Another good screening method is to search for online jobs in reputable places. For example job listings on most college/university websites are generally reliable. I also recommend visiting websites such as the Better Business Bureau to investigate any company you are considering working for.

To the right I’ve listed the best home based job directories. (All free!) Now while the majority of the offers are directed toward U.S. residents; there are many opportunities for people outside of the United States as well.

You’ll find that there is an enormous range in employment options available; anything from writing articles and webpage design to data entry or transcription typing to virtual customer care and home based call centre work. Some potential employers will require you take to take an online aptitude test. And you definitely will be required to submit an up to date resume. Avoid:

1. Any Job Opportunities that require a fee for joining or requests important personal information.

2. Similarly avoid any company that asks for money up front. Ie. For training materials.

3. Any job that could probably be outsourced much more cheaply, such as envelope stuffing or item assembly.

4. Chain Letters/Emails -- If you are a frequent visitor of the Internet, you might have come across chain letters or emails promising that if you send a specific amount to the top addresses on the list and pass them on to more addresses, you can get your name added to the list, and thus you can become a millionaire because other people will send you money as well. Well, these mails are framed in such a manner that only the top names receive all the money, leaving you trapped in cases of fraud

5. Typing At Home --- Similarly, If you enjoy using the internet quite a bit then your typing speed is bound to be good, and what better way to capitalize on it other than getting to do some typing work at home. Well, don’t jump on all such opportunities, as most of them are deceiving. Such advertisements send you a disk and printed information, for a fee. All you need to do is to type these home typist ads, place them on the Internet, and sell them to more people like you. So, you see this scam is trying to turn you into a scammer.

6. Statements like "no experience necessary."

7. Inflated or unrealistic statements about the amount of money you can earn. (if it seems to good to be true is likely is)

8. Businesses that are difficult to contact.
